EndNote

There are 501 citation styles (called Output Styles) built into EndNote, with thousands more available for download. Selecting an Output Style changes the formatting of your in-text citations and bibliography in your document.

Changing Output Style in EndNote Desktop

1. In the EndNote toolbar, click on Tools > Output Styles
2. Select the output style that you want to format citations in

You can see this change reflected in the Reference Window for a citation by double clicking on a citation in your EndNote library. You can also use the dropdown menu in this window to quickly change your selected output style. This is useful if you want to copy or insert a single citation in your document. 

My Citation Style is Not Listed

You can add your preferred citation style to your default Output Styles list:

1. Click on Tools > Output Styles > Output Style Manager
2. The EndNote Styles window will open. Scroll through the list of output styles or use the Find By button to sort styles by discipline and check the box next to the citation styles you want to add.
3. Close the EndNote styles window. The citations you placed checkmarks next to should automatically be saved in your Output Styles list

If a certain citation style is not available within the EndNote app, you can see if it is available for download from EndNote's Output Styles webpage.
To download and save a new output style to our EndNote library:

1. Find your desired citation style on EndNote's webpage and click Download. Open the downloaded file.
2. In the EndNote app, an editing window for your newly downloaded output style will appear.
3. Click on File > Save As. You can remove the word "copy" from the style name.
4. Click Save.
5. Close the editing window.

You can now select this output style within your EndNote desktop app!
