We hope this guide can serve as an entry point to discussion, self-discovery and growth, learning, and research. This guide is not meant to be an exhaustive resource and we recognize that there may not be perspectives or resources reflected in this space. What is DEIA?

A group of diverse medical professionals and patients standing next to each other.

Diversity: Refers to the presence of a wide range of individual and collective differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, socioeconomic status, physical abilities, and more. Embracing diversity involves recognizing and valuing these differences.

Equity: Focuses on ensuring fairness and justice in the treatment of individuals. It involves identifying and addressing systemic barriers and providing resources and opportunities to address disparities and achieve equal outcomes.

Inclusion: Involves creating authentic environments where everyone feels valued, respected, and included. It goes beyond mere diversity and seeks to foster a sense of belonging for individuals with different backgrounds and experiences.

Accessibility: Recognizes that all bodies have strength and needs that must be met. Encompasses designing spaces, services, and products in a way that is accessible to people with disabilities. This includes considerations for physical accessibility as well as digital accessibility for online content and technology.

Title image for digital timeline tool "Stories of Care and Control: A Timeline of the Medical Industrial Complex."Stories of Care and Control: A Timeline of the Medical Industrial Complex is a thought provoking digital timeline created by the Healing Histories Project.

This interactive resource allow users to explore over 500 years of medical history in the United States and visualize how the landscape of our healthcare has changed (or not changed) over time.

The history of medicine and care in the United States is deeply intertwined with our history of oppression and exploitation of vulnerable populations. It is valuable for practitioners and other healthcare workers to understand these legacies and reflect on how history has shaped the work they perform as well as the structural systems they must work within.
