SciENcv for Creating Your Biosketch

Some instructions on how to create a biosketch through SciENcv using a MyNCBI linked eRA account

What is eRA Commons?

The first step in accessing SciENcv is to establish an Electronic Research Administration (eRA) Commons account. ERA is a federal grants management system used by the NIH and other agencies. ERA accounts are essential for anyone involved in NIH-funded research and are intended to follow a researcher throughout their entire career. Each individual should only ever have one eRA Commons account, regardless of how many institutions they may work with over time. All Senior/Key Personnel on Federal Grants need to have an eRA Commons Account.

Creating an eRA Commons Account

  • Researchers who do not already have an eRA Commons account can contact the Grants Office at grants@siumed.edu to establish one.
    • Only university administrators, such as SIU's Grants Office, can create eRA Commons accounts. Researchers cannot create their own accounts. The Grants Office will also assign roles to these accounts.
  • If you have an account and need to switch your affiliation from a previous university, contact the Grants Office at grants@siumed.edu

Important: All eRA Commons accounts are permanent. Please avoid creating multiple accounts.

Link Your eRA Commons Account to MyNCBI

Once your eRA Commons account is set up, you'll need to link it to a MyNCBI account (since SciENcv is an NIH product, it is only accessible through MyNCBI). To link these accounts, follow the instructions below.

If you do not have a MyNCBI Account, create one and link it:

  1. Go to Pubmed
  2. Click "Sign in" at the top right of the page
  3. Choose to log in via eRA Commons
  4. Enter your Commons credentials (this should automatically sync your MyNCBI and eRA Commons accounts)

If you already have a MyNCBI Account, link it to your eRA Commons account:

  1. Go to Pubmed
  2. Click "Sign in" at the top right of the page and sign in
  3. Click on your login name in the top right of your MyNCBI dashboard
  4. Then click on the ‘Change’ button for ‘Linked Accounts’
  5. From the list of 'Login Account Options', scroll down and choose 'NIH & eRA Commons' and then log into your eRA Commons account

After linking these two accounts, you will be able to access MyNCBI while logged in with your Commons credentials.

Opening SciENcv

Once your eRA and MyNCBI accounts are created and linked, you can open SciENcv and begin crafting your grants documents. The link to SciENcv is usually in the bottom right of your MyNCBI dashboard as shown below.

Visit the next page of this LibGuide on "Creating Your Biosketch" for further guidance on SciENcv document creation.

Linking ORCID ID to SciENcv (Optional)

If you have an ORCID id, you can link it to SciENcv. This can be helpful for transferring information into a future SciENcv profile (although your eRA information will work just as well for this purpose).

Follow the steps below to link your ORCID id to SciENcv:

  • Click the "Edit" button next to "My Profile" on your SciENcv dashboard.

  • From the pop up, select the option to link your ORCID id

  • If you have an ORCID id, you can sign in to ORCID to associate the ORCID id with your Commons account
  • You will be prompted to authorize NIH to access your personal ORCID profile by clicking the Authorize Access button

Once you have successfully linked your ORCID id to your Commons account, it is displayed on your Personal Profile. This number is linked to the ORCID id system and clicking it displays your information. For information on creating an ORCID id visit "How do I register for an ORCID ID?"
